Additional information

Winrich von Kniprode's tenure as Grand Master — the longest of any holder of that office — coincided with the political and financial apex of the Teutonic Order in Prussia. The Halbschoter emerged as a practical denomination for regional commerce during this period, when the Order functioned effectively as a sovereign territorial state controlling amber, grain, and timber routes along the Baltic. Winrich's administration standardized coinage in a way his predecessors had not, and issues from his reign form the backbone of any serious collection of Ordensstaat numismatics.
