Obverse description Central field displays the quartered arms of Archbishop Ernst von Bayern within an inner circle, with the date inscribed above. The encircling legend commences at 12 o'clock, introduced by a cross (replaced by a rosette on 1550 issues), reading the archbishop's full titulature. The inscription identifies Ernst as confirmed Archbishop of Salzburg and Duke of both Bavarias. Lettering is in Latin capitals rendered in the late Gothic-Renaissance hammered style typical of the Salzburg mint in this period.
