Obverse description The civic arms of Augsburg — the distinctive pine cone (Pyr) set upon a stepped pedestal — are depicted in high relief at the center of the coin, enclosed within a raised inner circle. The surrounding legend, rendered in Roman capitals, reads AVGVSTA VINDELICORVM with the Roman numeral date (e.g. MDLXIIII) incorporated into the inscription. The design is characteristic of the hammered coinage produced by the Augsburg municipal mint, with the pine cone rendered in detailed scalloped relief.
