Additional information

Frankfurt struck guldentaler-denominated coins during the 1570s in direct response to the Imperial Coinage Ordinances that sought to standardize silver currency across the fragmented Holy Roman Empire. As a Free Imperial City, Frankfurt answered to the Emperor rather than any territorial prince, which gave its mint unusual latitude in timing and volume of production. The city's position as host to the imperial coronation ceremonies and the twice-yearly trade fairs made a credible large silver coin both a political statement and a commercial necessity.

The Davenport SG#29 attribution places this among the rarer Frankfurt guldentaler die marriages of that decade.
