Obverse description Central shield bearing the rampant lion of Hesse facing left, rendered in high relief with detailed mane and musculature. The shield is set within a beaded inner circle, framed by a continuous circular legend in Gothic-influenced Latin characters. The field surrounding the shield is smooth and slightly convex, typical of early hammered Guldengroschen coinage. The overall composition reflects the heraldic style characteristic of early sixteenth-century German territorial coinage.
