| Additional information |
Hessen-Homburg was among the smallest sovereign states in the German Confederation, covering barely 70 square kilometers with a population under 20,000. Its right to strike coinage was a jealously guarded prerogative, and Louis William exercised it during a reign that lasted only from 1839 to 1839 — he died within months of succeeding his brother Philip Augustus. The gulden dated 1838 was therefore struck under Philip Augustus, making the two-year span of this type a transition piece across two landgraves.
The issue conforms to the South German gulden standard established at the Munich Coinage Treaty of 1837.
