| Obverse description | Single-sided letterpress Kassenschein printed in green, with the denomination heading 'Danziger 1 Gulden' set in heavy Gothic blackletter at the top and corner ornaments repeating '1 GULDEN' in each quadrant. The central field carries the full redemption clause in German Gothic script, dated Danzig, den 22. Oktober 1923, above the issuer name 'Danziger Zentralkasse Aktiengesellschaft' in bold Gothic type. A red serial number with series letter appears at lower left alongside a manuscript signature, with an additional notice regarding the redemption period printed in smaller type along the bottom margin. |

The Danziger Zentralkasse was established specifically to serve the Free City of Danzig after the post-Versailles settlement created that unusual quasi-state in 1920 — technically under League of Nations protection, outside both Germany and Poland, yet economically entangled with both. The Zentralkasse notes filled a practical gap while the Danzig Gulden was being stabilized against hyperinflationary pressure emanating from the collapsing Reichsmark next door.
1923 was the peak of that crisis, and these small-denomination notes circulated hard. Survivors in any decent condition are less common than their relative obscurity might suggest.
