Obverse description Central device features the heraldic eagle of Frankfurt displayed with wings spread, facing dexter, surmounted by a mural crown above its head, rendered in high relief with finely detailed feathering throughout. The eagle's talons grasp decorative foliate scrollwork at the base of the design. The circular legend FREIE STADT arcs across the upper field and FRANKFURT curves along the lower field, both in raised Latin serif capitals. The whole is contained within a continuous beaded border.

Reverse description The denomination and date are displayed in three lines at the centre of the field, reading 1 / GULDEN / 1863 in bold raised Latin capitals and numerals. The central inscription is framed by a wreath of oak branches with finely detailed lobed leaves, the two branches tied at the base with a ribbon bow. The wreath opens at the top, with leaves meeting symmetrically at the apex. A continuous beaded border runs along the inner edge of the coin.
