The Privilegirte Oesterreichische National-Bank operated under severe strain by 1858. Austria had suspended convertibility in 1848 during the revolutionary upheavals, and though formal resumption was attempted in 1858–59, the looming war with France and Piedmont — which would erupt in 1859 — kept the currency chronically overissued and distrusted. This 1 Gulden note entered circulation at precisely the moment those pressures were peaking.

Geiger was primarily a history painter and illustrator, an unusual choice for banknote design, and his involvement reflects the Viennese tendency of that period to treat currency as a printmaking commission rather than a security engineering problem. The watermark was doing real work here — the printing technology otherwise offered limited protection against counterfeiting.
