Paraguay decimalized its currency in 1943, replacing the peso with the guaraní at a rate of 100 pesos to 1 guaraní — a reform driven by chronic inflation that had eroded the peso through decades of post-Chaco War fiscal strain. The guaraní itself then suffered generations of its own devaluation; by the early 2000s, a single U.S. dollar fetched over 6,000 of them.
This 2013 silver piece is a commemorative, not a circulation issue — no 1-guaraní coin has functioned as everyday tender for decades, the denomination long rendered economically meaningless in base metal.
