Additional information

Paraguay's postwar monetary reform of 1943–1944 replaced the peso with the guaraní at a rate of 100 to 1, but standardizing the physical coinage took years. This 1948 nickel pattern represents one of several trial pieces struck as the Banco del Paraguay worked through proposed specifications before settling on final circulating types. Pattern coinage from this transitional period in Paraguay is genuinely scarce in any form — institutional records from the Banco del Paraguay are fragmentary, and the number of pieces struck for most Pn-series trials remains unknown.
