Pope Francis visited Paraguay in July 2015 — the final stop on a three-country South American tour that included Ecuador and Bolivia — drawing what local authorities estimated at over one million people to a single outdoor Mass in Asunción. It was his first papal visit to his home continent since assuming the papacy in 2013, and the only one to reach the Southern Cone that year. Paraguay issued this commemorative in silver specifically to mark the occasion, an unusual expenditure for a country whose circulating 1 Guaraní had long since ceased to hold any practical purchasing power.
