Issued by the Banco Central del Paraguay as part of a broader series celebrating intangible cultural heritage, this piece commemorates tereré — the cold yerba mate preparation that UNESCO added to its Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2020, five years after this coin was struck. The drink is so embedded in Paraguayan daily life that it was consumed by soldiers during the Chaco War as a primary source of hydration in extreme heat.
