Reverse description Saint Ambrose, patron saint of Milan, depicted in full pontifical vestments seated frontally on an ornate throne. In his left hand he holds a whip or scourge, the traditional attribute of episcopal authority and his role as defender of the faith, while his right hand grasps a crozier. His nimbed head is rendered in a hieratic, stylised manner consistent with the Gothic artistic conventions of early fifteenth-century Italian ecclesiastical coinage. The surrounding circumferential legend in uncial Latin identifies the saint and the city.
