Obverse description Central field displays the papal coat of arms of Pope Paul III (Alessandro Farnese), consisting of a quartered shield bearing the Farnese lilies, surmounted by the papal tiara and crossed keys of Saint Peter. The shield is set within an ornate cartouche with foliate mantling. The surrounding circular legend is interrupted by the year notation, with the regnal year appearing prominently to the left of the shield.

Reverse description Nimbed bust of Saint Paul facing left, rendered in high relief with a full beard and draped mantle, in the Renaissance style typical of Roman papal coinage. The apostle is depicted with naturalistic facial features and flowing drapery over the left shoulder. A mintmaster's mark appears below the bust in the lower field. The circular legend surrounding the figure identifies the saint and the issuing city.
