| Reverse description | The reverse presents a frontal enthroned figure of Sant'Ambrogio (Saint Ambrose), patron saint of Milan, depicted in full episcopal vestments including mitre and cope, holding a whip or scourge in one hand as his traditional attribute. The saint is shown in a hieratic, stylized manner consistent with Gothic ecclesiastical iconography on Milanese medieval coinage. A circular Latin legend surrounds the central image reading AMBROSIV MEDIOLANI, invoking the saint's association with the city of Milan. The flan shows typical hammered irregularity with die wear visible around the periphery. This reverse type is a longstanding convention on Milanese grossi issues. |
