Obverse description A long cross pattée occupies the center of the field, dividing the inner reeded circle and the surrounding legend. At the termination of the legend, the Della Scala dynastic arms — a ladder (scala) — divide the letters A and M, standing for Alberto and Mastino. The design is executed in the restrained, angular style characteristic of northern Italian communal coinage of the mid-fourteenth century.
