Obverse description Central field displays the papal coat of arms of Adrian VI, a quartered shield bearing the devices of his family — lions and fleurs-de-lis — surmounted by the papal tiara and flanked by the crossed keys of Saint Peter, the traditional symbols of pontifical authority. The shield is rendered in a late Gothic heraldic style typical of early sixteenth-century Roman hammered coinage. A circular Latin legend surrounds the composition, reading the pope's name and title. The overall design is characteristic of the Roman mint's output during the brief pontificate of Adrian VI.
