Obverse description Within a beaded border (greneti), the central field depicts the she-wolf of Siena statant, head turned sinister and lowered, suckling the twins Romulus and Remus — the founding emblem of the city. The device is encircled by a Latin legend reading SENA VETVS CIVITAS VIRGIN, identifying the ancient virgin city of Siena. The design is characteristic of the struck hammered coinage of the Sienese Republic, rendered in a bold, stylized medieval manner.
