Obverse description The Bolognese lion rampant left, depicted with flowing mane and raised forepaw, grasping a tall diagonal staff surmounted by a pennant or banner, all contained within a quadrilobe inner border. The boldly rendered heraldic lion serves as the civic emblem of Bologna, executed in the vigorous Gothic style typical of late medieval Italian hammered coinage. A circular legend in uncial Latin characters surrounds the quadrilobe, separated from it by a beaded border.
