Obverse description Central field occupied by a quartered heraldic shield displaying the arms of Montbéliard, featuring a lion passant in the upper quarters and fish-like charges in the lower quarters, all within a beaded inner circle. The circumscribed Latin legend LUDOVICUS D G COMES MONTISBEL runs around the periphery, identifying Louis, Count of Montbéliard by the grace of God. The coin is struck by the hammered technique on a somewhat irregular flan, characteristic of late 16th-century small silver issues. The date 1579 appears flanking the shield in the field.
