| Additional information |
Brunswick issued this groschen under Duke Wilhelm during a period when the duchy was operating its own monetary system in parallel with broader German coinage reform discussions. The German states were moving fitfully toward standardization under the Dresden Convention of 1838 and its successors, yet Brunswick continued striking subsidiary silver in billon well into the late 1850s — a stubbornness that would end with the North German Confederation absorbing the duchy's monetary autonomy after 1866.
The .220 fineness marks this as a transitional-era piece, minted just before Prussian annexation in 1866 effectively ended Brunswick's independent coinage.
