Obverse description Frontal effigy of Charlemagne enthroned, crowned and nimbed, holding an orb in his left hand and a model of Aachen Cathedral in his right, serving as the patron saint and imperial protector of the city. Below the figure, the Aachen city arms featuring an imperial eagle are displayed prominently in the lower field. The design is executed in the Gothic hammered style typical of late medieval Rhenish municipal coinage, with the legend surrounding the central device within a beaded border.
