Obverse description Facing crowned bust of Charlemagne (Carolus Magnus) depicted as a bearded emperor, wearing an imperial crown, set upon a throne or architectural base with heraldic eagles visible at the lower left and right flanks. The effigy is rendered in the Gothic hammered style typical of late medieval Rhenish coinage. A circular legend in uncial Latin surrounds the central design, invoking the sanctity of Charlemagne as Holy Emperor, separated by rosette or pellet stops.
