Philip Julius ruled Pomerania-Wolgast as the last of his line, a duchy already in steep decline as Swedish and Brandenburg ambitions closed in from every direction. He died in 1625 without a male heir, triggering the absorption of Wolgast into Swedish Pomerania — making his coinage effectively a terminal issue for an independent mint tradition stretching back centuries.
The seven-year span covered by Hildisch 180–186 suggests annual die production, which was common for small German territories maintaining the appearance of monetary autonomy they could barely afford in practice.
