Saxe-Jena was one of the shortest-lived of the Ernestine Saxon duchies, existing only from 1672 until 1690 when it was absorbed back into Saxe-Eisenach upon the death of Duke Bernhard. This piece was struck during that narrow window under the regency administration following Duke Johann Wilhelm's death in 1678, with Maria Charlotte of Saxe-Jena acting in a governing capacity — an unusual circumstance that accounts for the "Maria" attribution in the series. The Slg. Merseburg reference places it firmly within a documented but thinly collected ducal coinage.
