| Obverse description | Central field features a crowned ducal monogram flanked symmetrically by two upright palm branches, symbolizing honor and memory. A circular legend in Latin surrounds the composition, reading in part 'INTAMINATIS COELO REDUX FULGET HONORIBUS,' a classical phrase extolling the duke's unblemished glory in heaven. The Roman numeral date MDCCXXIX appears below the monogram. The overall design is executed in a Baroque style typical of early 18th-century German memorial coinage. |

John Ernest IV died in January 1729 after a reign of just four years, leaving the duchy under regency for his minor son Franz Josias. Memorial groschen of this type were a well-established Thuringian convention — grief monetized quickly, struck while the court was still in mourning and distributed partly as keepsakes rather than circulating currency. That origin explains why survivors often appear in higher states of preservation than their nominal face value would suggest.
