Obverse description Central field features the crowned shield of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, bearing the quartered ducal arms, flanked on either side by decorative oak or laurel branches. A crown surmounts the shield above. The circular legend reads HERZOGTH.S. COB.-GOTHA surrounding the design, with the mintmaster's initial G appearing at the base of the legend. The overall style is typical of mid-nineteenth-century German state coinage produced at the Munich Mint.
