Stolberg's groschen coinage of the 1580s emerged from a county perpetually fragmented by inheritance disputes among the Stolberg-Stolberg, Stolberg-Wernigerode, and Stolberg-Rossla lines. The 1580 issue falls within a period when joint coinage was sometimes struck to satisfy obligations under the imperial monetary ordinances — the Reichsmünzordnungen — while still asserting individual comital authority. Friedrich 663a distinguishes this variety from closely related dies of the same year, a distinction that matters given how frequently Stolberg minor silver circulates misattributed.
