| Obverse description | Crowned and bearded bust of Sigismund II Augustus facing right, depicted in the early portrait style with a jewelled crown and draped attire. The royal effigy is rendered in low relief characteristic of hammered billon coinage. The legend, split across three lines in the field, is partially divided by the crown at the top: SIGIS AVG REX in the upper register, POLO MAG at center, and DVX L at the base. The inscription abbreviates the king's full royal titulature as King of Poland and Grand Duke of Lithuania. |
