Reverse description A quartered shield of the royal arms of England and France — alternating fleurs-de-lis and lions passant guardant — is superimposed upon a long cross fourchée extending to the inner circle. The initials T W (for Thomas Wolsey, Archbishop of York) appear in the field to either side of the shield, and a cardinal's or archbishop's hat is displayed below the shield, denoting the York ecclesiastical mint. The reverse legend in uncial Latin script identifies the issuing city, disposed around the periphery within a beaded border.
