| Obverse description | Right-facing profile bust of Henry VII, depicted as a mature effigy wearing a jewelled crown and a fur-trimmed robe, rendered in the Renaissance portrait style introduced on English coinage during his reign. The king's facial features are naturalistically modelled with curling hair visible beneath the crown, reflecting the influence of Flemish and Italian portraiture. The effigy is set within an inner beaded circle, with the royal legend disposed around the periphery between the inner and outer borders. A mintmark appears at the beginning of the legend at the top of the coin. The overall design represents a significant departure from the earlier facing bust tradition and marks a milestone in English numismatic art. |
