| Obverse description | Armored bust of Philip IV of Spain facing right, set within an oval cartouche or shield-like frame, surrounded by decorative foliate or scroll ornaments. The effigy is rendered in the baroque style typical of Spanish viceregal coinage of the mid-seventeenth century. The peripheral Latin legend reads PHILIPPVS IIII D G REX, identifying the sovereign as King Philip IV by the grace of God. The legend is arranged in an arc around the upper and lower fields of the flan. The coin displays the characteristic irregular planchet and flat strike associated with hammered production. |
