Obverse description Quartered shield bearing the arms of Grand Master Antoine de Paule, combining the dynastic arms of the de Paule family with the cross of the Order of St. John. The escutcheon is rendered in a bold, slightly crude hammered style characteristic of early seventeenth-century Maltese coinage. A circular Latin legend surrounds the shield, commencing with a cross pattée.
