The Northern Republic of Haiti was not a separate state but rather the short-lived administration of Florvil Hyppolite in the north of the island, before his forces defeated Légitime's southern government in 1889 and reunified the country. This note was issued during that civil conflict, making it one of the more politically specific emissions in Haitian numismatic history — tied to a faction, not a settled sovereign.

ABNC's involvement was typical for Caribbean issuers of the period, but the political circumstances that prompted the order were anything but routine. Hyppolite's government needed credible paper currency quickly, and New York could deliver it.
