The Banque de la République d'Haïti had its low-denomination notes printed by De La Rue throughout much of the late twentieth century — a common arrangement for Caribbean states whose own printing infrastructure couldn't meet security standards. The 1 Gourde occupies the bottom of the denomination ladder, a position that typically means high print runs and rough handling, though by the early 1990s Haiti's chronic inflation had eroded its purchasing power to near-irrelevance in daily transactions.
The 1992–1993 date range coincides with the period following the September 1991 military coup that ousted President Aristide, during which international sanctions and economic disruption compressed the formal banking system considerably.
