Reverse description A large heraldic shield, quartered with the arms of the Archbishopric of Cologne (checky) and the Palatinate-Bavaria lion, is superimposed upon a long voided cross that extends to the coin's inner border, dividing the field into four quadrants. The cross arms are ornamented with small beaded or milled lines. The peripheral legend in Gothic uncial script reads: MOn nOVA AVRE A RIL, identifying this as a new gold coin struck at Rheinberg (Ril). A beaded inner circle separates the central device from the marginal inscription.
