| Obverse description | Full-length frontal figure of Saint John the Baptist, nimbed and bearded, standing erect within a beaded inner circle, holding a tall cross-scepter in his right hand and a lamb in his left arm. A small eagle is depicted between his feet, referencing the Palatinate heraldic tradition. The saint is rendered in the Gothic hammered style typical of late 14th-century Rhenish goldgulden, with flowing drapery and a prominent mandorla-like surround. The peripheral legend in Gothic uncial characters reads RVPRT DVX COMS PALO, identifying the issuer Rupert II as Duke and Count Palatine. |
