Additional information

The Neujahrsgoldgulden — New Year's gold gulden — was a Bavarian court tradition of presenting gold pieces as seasonal gifts, a practice with roots stretching back centuries into the Holy Roman Empire. By Ludwig II's reign these were not struck for circulation but distributed personally, making survival dependent almost entirely on recipients choosing to preserve rather than spend them. Ludwig II ascended to the Bavarian throne in March 1864 at eighteen years old, making this among the earliest coins issued under his name.

The Schlumberger reference 947.1 suggests at least one recognized die variant exists within this date.
