Obverse description Square klippe flan struck with a circular die. The central field depicts the Virgin Mary enthroned, crowned and nimbed, holding the Christ Child before her in a frontal presentation; both figures are rendered in a late Gothic or early Renaissance style typical of Rhenish ecclesiastical coinage. The design is enclosed within a beaded inner circle. The surrounding legend reads V: G: GN: IOHAN. BISCHOF. ZV. STRASB, running along the inner border and identifying Bishop Johann (John IV of Manderscheid-Blanckenheim) as Bishop of Strasbourg.
