Obverse description Crowned ornate shield bearing the ducal arms of Saxony, set within a decorative wreath. The date 1623 is divided and appears in the outer margin at the top of the coin. The legend MONETA. NOVA. AVREA. runs around the periphery in Latin characters, denoting the coin's status as a new gold issue. The shield displays the characteristic Saxon electoral arms with finely engraved detail consistent with early seventeenth-century German hammered goldsmith work.
