Additional information

Edzard Cirksena died in 1441, leaving his brother Ulrich to continue the joint coinage they had initiated — which is why this gulden carries both names across a reign interrupted by death. The Cirksena family had only recently consolidated control over East Frisia, and the right to strike gold coinage was itself a mark of political ambition well above what minor North Sea lords typically commanded. Ulrich would go on to become the first Count of East Frisia in 1464, but these earlier issues predate that legitimacy entirely.
