Obverse description Full-length figure of St. John the Baptist standing facing, nimbed and robed in flowing ecclesiastical vestments, his right hand raised in blessing and his left hand holding a book or tablet before him. The saint is depicted within a beaded inner circle, rendered in the Gothic style characteristic of late 14th-century Rhenish goldgulden coinage. A circular legend in uncial characters surrounds the central device, reading ADOLVS AREPIS MAGN, identifying Archbishop Adolphus I of Nassau as the issuing authority.
