Obverse description Within a plain inner circle, a shield bearing the arms of Regensburg: two crossed keys with elaborate bows, the date 1617 inscribed above the shield in the upper field. A circular Latin legend surrounds the inner circle, reading in part upside-down at the base, consistent with the hammered coin alignment. The design is bold and deeply struck in the manner of early 17th-century German municipal gold coinage.
