Obverse description Draped and crowned bust of Philip II facing right, rendered in high relief with finely detailed ruff collar and elaborate crown. The king's bearded effigy is depicted in the Renaissance portrait style characteristic of mid-sixteenth-century Netherlandish coinage. A circular Latin legend surrounds the bust, separated from the inner field by a plain border. The portrait occupies the majority of the coin's face, demonstrating the bold, large-module design typical of hammered gold reals of this period.
