| Obverse description | Facing bust of Emperor Charles V in full imperial regalia, crowned with an elaborate arched crown, depicted half-length and armoured, holding a sceptre in his right hand and an orb surmounted by a cross in his left. The figure is rendered in the late Gothic hammered style typical of Netherlandish gold coinage of the mid-sixteenth century. A beaded inner circle frames the central effigy, with the Latin legend running clockwise around the periphery between two beaded borders. |

| Reverse description | The reverse displays the large, elaborately quartered arms of Charles V as Holy Roman Emperor and King of Spain, comprising the multiple heraldic fields of Castile, León, Aragon, Sicily, Austria, Burgundy, Brabant, Flanders, and Tyrol, surmounted by an imperial crown. The shield is supported on either side by decorative mantling or wing-like ornamental devices. A beaded inner circle surrounds the shield, and the devotional Latin legend runs continuously around the outer border between two beaded cordons, a mintmaster's mark visible at the base of the shield. |
