Obverse description Crowned and armored three-quarter facing effigy of Emperor Charles V enthroned, holding an orb surmounted by a cross in his right hand and a scepter in his left, set within a beaded inner circle. The emperor is depicted in full imperial regalia, his crown prominently rendered with Gothic detail. The surrounding circular legend in Latin reads: CAROLVS · D · G · ROM · IMP · HISP · REX · D · B · Z · HOL, interrupted by a floral ornament at the top. The style is characteristic of Netherlandish hammered gold coinage of the mid-sixteenth century.
