Obverse description Central floriated cross with elaborately decorated arms terminating in fleurs-de-lis and foliate ornaments, occupying the majority of the coin's field. A mint mark divides the date at the top of the cross. The surrounding circular legend, rendered in Latin, reads PHIL · IIII · D · G · HISP · ET · INDIAR · REX · with the date 16-47 flanking the uppermost arm of the cross. The entire design is executed in the bold, high-relief hammered style characteristic of Spanish Netherlands gold coinage of the early seventeenth century.
