| Obverse description | Central field displays the papal coat of arms of Pope Pius V — a shield bearing diagonal barry stripes (per the Ghislieri family arms) — surmounted by the papal tiara and crossed keys of Saint Peter, rendered in the bold, slightly naive hammered style typical of mid-16th century Roman coinage. The shield is framed by elaborate foliate and cartouche ornaments. A circular Latin legend runs along the periphery, separated from the central device by a beaded inner border. A mint mark appears at the lower portion of the field. |
