Obverse description The papal arms of Pius V occupying the central field, depicting the Ghislieri family escutcheon barry of six pieces, surmounted by the papal tiara and the crossed keys of Saint Peter, the whole set within elaborate cartouche-style mantling. The shield is rendered in a bold, slightly worn hammered style characteristic of late Renaissance papal coinage. A beaded inner border frames the composition, with the pontifical legend distributed around the periphery.
